I Watched YI YI

"There isn't a cloud or tree that isn't beautiful. People should be like this, too."

That's a line from the Taiwanese indie film Yi Yi. I finally watched it this week and found many beautiful shots and dialogue that stuck with me.

The Jian family embodies the experiences of Taiwan's urban middle class as they grapple with personal and broader social issues. By portraying family members at various stages of life—childhood and adolescence—the viewer can examine how different generations perceive and respond to societal transformations.

We are all spinning around together on this planet. It’s amazing that we are all together at this point in time. Sure, we are separated by so many different things, but we will always have that.

We may be headed in different directions in our lives and in our thoughts. But our bodies have always been headed back to the ground where they came from. They are just loaners from Earth. We are all going to die someday. All of us.

We experience new things together, help them grow, and sometimes watch them turn into old things. But that will always happen to us. We get to do that together. Might as well do it being aware of all the beauty in everything and everyone.

The character Ota in the film said,

"Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice. We're never afraid of getting up every morning. Why?"
